Well above the Arctic Circle, in the village of Kolari in Finnish Lapland, Ari Räisänen ploughs snow with his Hyundai HL757-7A wheel loader in the dark hours of an early winter morning. In these parts, the snowy season stretches over nearly six months, starting from the first snow in November. That’s when the long working days start at 3 AM.
”When it’s snow ploughing season we drive about 12 hours a day”, Ari says. “The freight train loading area must be cleaned first, and then some store yards and parking lots before people start to show up. No matter what the weather is, we are the first ones on the road.”
The new Hakkapeliitta Loader tyres have surprised Räisänen with their grip. “There is a lot of back and forth driving in the parking lots for instance”, he says. “That’s when the traction grip is strikingly good.”
Even on special circumstances Hakkapeliitta Loader can save the day. “A little while ago I drove to a ditch, when the road was ploughed too wide”, Ari reminisces. With his previous tyres, he wouldn’t have stood a chance to make it back on the road without towing, but Hakkapeliitta Loader proved different. “With the new tyres, I decided to give it a try”, he smiles. “And I must say I was pretty surprised when my wheel loader climbed nicely back on road.”
The largest airport in Finland, Helsinki-Vantaa, is famous for being operational at just about every weather. That makes it an ideal location for testing the new Hakkapeliitta Loader on a wheel loader driven by Jorma Siivola.
The paving of a runway on Helsinki-Vantaa airport is on full flight, when Siivola drives his CAT 950K wheel loader in front of a DHL freight terminal. For testing purposes, the wheel loader is equipped with the new Nokian Hakkapeliitta Loader tyres in size 23.5R25.
”We have been driving some 700 hours with these, and they work fine”, says Jorma. Even though Hakkapeliitta Loader has impressive winter properties, the summer use presents no problem either. “We have been using these all through the summer at the quarry, and to our surprise a tyre with such winter specs can hold up in that use as well”, he sums it up.
Known for its effective snow removal, Helsinki-Vantaa airport constantly invests on ploughing equipment. The snow ploughing crew has a number of carefully trained ploughing patterns that are used depending on the weather type. This ensures the safe landing of planes and uninterrupted travelling of people. In this environment Nokian Hakkapeliitta Loader shines, be it winter or summer.
