It’s all about the driver – Nokian Tyres supports Scania Driver Competitions

The safety, sustainability and fuel economy of road transports rely heavily on one factor – the driver skills. To raise the profile of the professionals making a living on the road, the truck manufacturer Scania organizes the world’s largest driver competition Scania Driver Competitions, a series of challenges that put over 350,000 professional drivers’ skills to the test. Nokian Tyres provides the trucks used in the Finnish qualification challenges with top-notch tires.

When it comes to safety, professional drivers have a big responsibility. They do their job driving heavy trucks in every weather, on the roads full of passenger traffic. The ever-changing conditions and situations mean there is no substitute to their driver skills. The winning of the driver competition requires determination, courage and the ability to be the best driver of the new generation.

Scania Driver Competitions is a Europe-wide event with local qualification rounds, National Finals and finally one European Final. In Finland, the local qualification events are held during the spring in Hämeenlinna, Jyväskylä and Oulu. The Finnish National Finals is held in Helsinki on 10–11 May in conjunction with Transport-Logistics exhibition.

The qualifications include driving tests such as safe and economical driving and first aid skills. There is also Water Challenge, which consists of maneuvering the truck without splashing the water tank attached to it. Knock the King tests the driver’s ability to maneuver the vehicle calmly in tight spaces, and Boardwalk tests how they can estimate the space taken by the vehicle when driving in reverse.

The trucks used in the Finnish qualifications are equipped with Nokian Tyres products. The steering axle tire of choice is our flagship winter product for trucks and buses, Nokian Hakkapeliitta Truck F2. The drive axle tires are Nokian Hakkapeliitta Truck E, another top-of-the line product for snowy roads, and the trailer is fitted with Nokian E-Truck Trailer tires.

“Nokian Tyres has worked for decades to improve safety, sustainability and fuel economy of professional driving by developing tires with better grip and handling, perfecting low-emission manufacturing processes and a lowering the tire rolling resistance”, says Teppo Siltanen, Product Manager at Nokian Tyres. “But all the technology in the world cannot replace a careful, skilled driver. Scania Driver Competitions puts the focus where it should be – the person behind the steering wheel.”
