Material-handling machine tyres and harbour tyres
Harbour tyres are a special tyre type that demands both wear-resistance and cost-effectiveness. Nokian Heavy Tyres develops its material-handling tyres in co-operation with the world’s leading machine manufacturers, in order to meet the field’s demanding requirements. The much-praised wear-resistance is the result of meticulous material and structure development work and of testing carried out in the tyres’ actual operating conditions.

A wide range of harbour tyres
The harbour tyres and material-handling machine tyres constitute a product range that includes tyres for harbour and terminal machines and other material-handling machines in harbours and in industry. Harbour equipment, such as reach stackers, machines for timber-handling, and RTG cranes, requires high carrying capacity and low rotation resistance. When the harbour machine tyre is also stable, the machine’s driveability and productivity are improved, and economical and efficient solutions can be reached. Suitable material-handling tyres are available for forklift trucks and timber-handling machines, for example. The Shockabsorb Radial Construction (S.R.C.) structure, created as fruit of our development work, combines the best qualities of radial and cross-ply structures in a single product. We were also the first tyre manufacturer in the world to introduce a special harbour machine tyre developed for terminal tractors – the Nokian HTS Tugger.
Special requirements are charted with machine manufacturers
The harbour tyres are tested in real-world operating conditions in co-operation with harbour machine manufacturers. A ‘one size fits all’ solution is not suitable for every machine; instead, the harbour tyres and other material-handling machine tyres are tailored to the special requirements of the equipment. For all machines handling heavy loads, high carrying capacity is essential, but wear-resistance, stability, and adhesion are equally important capabilities.
An appropriate harbour tyre for the harbour machine
A reach stacker requires high stability in order to reduce swinging. Stability in the harbour tyre to be used enables higher average speeds in a safe manner, increasing overall productivity. The Nokian HTS Straddle TL has been designed particularly for reach stackers.
An RTG crane tyre needs high carrying capacity but also as low a rotating resistance as possible. Nokian Heavy Tyres offers a product designed especially for rubber-tyred RTG cranes: the Nokian Industrial RTG harbour tyre. This harbour machine tyre has successfully catered for the special needs of the large machine.
The Nokian Heavy Tyres harbour tyre range also includes separate products for reach stackers, terminal tractors, and harbour forklifts.
The tyres for material-handling machines withstand wear and tear
Nokian Heavy Tyres offers targeted solutions in the Nokian HTS product family that are suitable for material-handling machines. When one handles containers, timber, or products of heavy industry, the surrounding conditions vary substantially. If the tyre is used in a roofed terminal shed, a different product is needed than in operation outside – for example, in the storage area of a mill or lumberyard. Maximal skid-resistance, impact-resistance, and need for grip are among the requirements for both material-handling machine tyres and harbour tyres. The Nokian Heavy Tyres product selection helps you find durable tyres that are suitable for the different types of work equipment, such as forklift trucks, timber-handling machines, and telescopic loaders.
Support for harbour tyres and material-handling machine operators
Both in material-handling operations and in harbour work, the fuels and tyres create significant costs. A durable harbour tyre is essential, but in addition to wear-resistance, the tyre must have the ability to turn and roll lightly. This, in turn, decreases the fuel costs. Nokian Heavy Tyres offers information to clients about cost management and support for the selection and installation of the tyres – and for the whole tyre maintenance cycle. The professionals providing our technical tyre service can travel to see the customer if necessary in order to guarantee successful operation. Close co-operation with harbour and material-handling machine operators also enables us to collect information for Nokian Heavy Tyres product development.Environment-friendly low aromatic oils are used in the manufacture of our harbour tyres and material-handling machine tyres.
